Taste of the Alleghenies: Kids' Cooking Contest Announced

Some of the area’s youngest aspiring chefs will take center-kitchen in a new edition of the Taste of the Alleghenies Weekend! A Kids’ Cooking Contest, sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association will be held Saturday, May 2nd at the Blair County Convention Center as part of the two-day festival of food and fun.Kids ages 5, 6 & 7 are welcome to submit a completed coloring page, depicting a healthy lunch of pizza, milk and fruit. The pages are now available in the Altoona Mirror and at the Altoona Mirror offices. Deadline for submission is Friday, April 24th. The artwork will decorate the halls of the Blair County Convention Center during the Taste of the Alleghenies weekend. Eight finalists will be drawn randomly from the coloring pages to compete in a pizza-making contest during Saturday’s festivities.The kids will be given special chef hats and aprons, and will then have a choice of an array of sauces and toppings to decorate their very own pizzas. Each pizza will be cooked by the staff of the Blair County Convention Center, and then be judged by a panel of celebrity judges. The top three place-winners will be announced, and all 8 finalists will receive a variety of prizes.The Taste of Home Cooking School will highlight the day in the grand ballroom. Also on Saturday, guests can enjoy a large vendor show and another special contest: the Three Course Cook-Off, featuring Mothers Against Drunk Drivers and the US Armed Forces Moms, plus door prizes and much more. Sunday’s events include a marquis show by the Food Network’s Deen Brothers, Jamie & Bobby, who will also judge the Taste of the Alleghenies Signature Dessert Contest. The vendor show continues through Sunday with demonstrations, displays, tastings and lots of door prizes.
