Outdoors in the Alleghenies: Getting Ready for Golf Season
04/08/09

It may still be a bit cold outside, but it’s definitely time to warm up your golf game.D.R. Long – Head Golf Professional Scotch Valley Country Club: “Getting ready for the spring and summer, you probably want to go hit the driving range first, hit a bag or two of balls, it’s good to get loosened up and stretch before each round. A lot of people tend to jump out of the car and run to the first tee I’ve noticed most people make double-bogey or worse on the first hole. I see a lot of people taking an extra ball on the first tee, which is kind of a little bit of a warm-up, but I would suggest hitting a bag or half a bag of range balls before each round.”The game of golf is always evolving – and there’s always new equipment to try.Long: “The technology of today – you should definitely try to upgrade your clubs if they are more than 4 years old. The older irons have really been out of date. We have new clubs whose technology allows you to hit the ball higher, farther, and a lot more accurate.”Long expects a good year on area golf courses – in spite of the tough economic times.“I think the economy may help – may keep a lot of people from traveling out of the area to go play golf, say take a weekend to Virginia and decide to stay in PA, it’s very inexpensive golf around the area, and if gas prices go back up to $4 per gallon, a lot of people aren’t going to want to travel 100 miles to play golf, so they’ll stay locally.”Where the rolling hills of the Alleghenies create a beautiful backdrop birdies and bogies.Long: “Pennsylvania courses have to offer a lot of scenery, out here at Scotch Valley we have the beautiful backdrop of Frankstown Mountain, which in the fall us just beautiful. We have hills, it’s beautiful here, with so many vistas.”The 2008 golf season lasted well into December, and if Mother Nature cooperates, Long expects similar success in 2009.
