Outdoors in the Alleghenies: Trout Season Opens
It’s been a busy couple of weeks for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and their volunteers – stocking rivers, streams and creeks just in time for trout season – 40-thousand fish are being poured into waterways in Blair County alone.WCO Craig Garman, PA Fish & Boat Commission: “We’re right on schedule, stocking all the fish in all the local waterways, we’ve had no obstacles at this time, things are going great.”Pennsylvania offers some of the best trout fishing in the world, you’ll find species ranging from the native Brook trout, to brown and rainbow trout – including steelhead and golden rainbow.Garman: “The fish this year have been extremely nice. 2 years ago we went to a larger fish, fewer fish aspect and it’s worked really well. We’re seeing larger fish, heavier fish, and I can tell you in Blair County, I’ve seen the nicest fish I’ve stocked in 15 years. We have a lot of beautiful streams, nice water that we are stocking fish in, and in addition to that we have a lot of native trout streams, streams that produce a native population, one of the best in the state, actually.”The Fish and Boat Commission reminds anglers over the age of 16 – you must have a license to fish in Pennsylvania, and a trout stamp to fish in approved trout waters. The creel limit from opening day to Labor Day is 5 combined species, which must be a minimum of seven inches. You can fish 24 hours a day in Pennsylvania – after the season opens – at 8am on Saturday, April 18th.Garman: "Enjoy yourself, be safe, it’s a good opportunity to get out and enjoy yourself with your family, it’s going to be a nice day. Get out and enjoy the weather and have fun fishing."For more information, visit the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission website: www.fish.state.pa.us.
